Abby set her copy of The Pilgrim’s Progress on the flowered sofa beside her and watched her father and Cole converse over a game of chess. Dinner, dessert, and now reading couldn’t erase the feel of Cole’s lips against hers.

Looking for a distraction, she strode to the Swiss music box her father had bought her mother for their twenty-fifth wedding anniversary. Hand-painted flowers adorned the front of the walnut case, adding to the detailed inlay on top. She turned the crank and closed her eyes as the music began.

“May I please have this dance?”

Cole stood before her. She looked to her father who leaned back in his wheelchair and grinned.

“Of course.” Her heart pounded as the melodic strains of a waltz played in the background.

The open space in the room was far from adequate, but nothing mattered to Abby except that she was in Cole’s arms. He held her tightly, his gaze never leaving hers.

“I had a wonderful day,” he said.

“So did I.”

She floated in his arms and felt lighter than an autumn leaf soaring gently in the breeze. His bay rum aftershave and the subtle wisp of his breath against her cheek left her senseless. Long before she was ready, the song ended.

“Thank you,” he said.

“You’re welcome.” She stepped out of the warmth of his embrace, longing to return.

Someone knocked on the front door, and Abby heard Bertie shuffle from the kitchen to answer it. A moment later, Sheriff Jefferson entered the room, his hands stuffed into the back pockets of his denim trousers.

“Evenin,’ Sheriff.” Aaron pushed his wheelchair away from the marble-topped table and edged toward his long time acquaintance. “What can we do for you?”

“Evenin,’ Aaron,” he said then nodded toward Cole and Abby. “Wish this was a pleasure call, but it’s not.”

Abby watched as her father’s expression turned grave. “What is it, Sam?”

“Aaron, as a friend I’m here to tell you that I’m taking Shorty into town for questioning. Claude Simpson’s barn burned down tonight. Witnesses placed Shorty at the scene.”

Sam cleared his throat, and an eerie silence followed as they waited for him to continue. “But as the sheriff, I have to warn you. If you have anything to do with the destruction that’s been taking place these past six months, I’ll personally see that you hang.”
